Normal Pricing

ProtoLife has unique, cost-efficient, pay-as-you-go approach to pricing. We do not require costly ongoing subscriptions, and instead enable users to pay for use of PDT generation by generation.

Pricing below is cited in terms of PDT credits, purchased at protolife.com (available after registering as a user, and logging in). Currently PDT Credits may be purchased at $1 per credit.

Normal pricing of PDT is dynamic, in that it depends on the complexity of your problem, which scales with the size of your experimental space definition (ESD). Some details of dynamic pricing are given below. The basic price starts out at less than 100 PDT credits per generation for relatively simple ESD's. An example ESD costing about 100 PDT credits per generation has five experimental parameters with five values each.

Our web interface hits a maximal experimental complexity when ESD's reach 20 parameters with 20 values each. PDT can be configured to handle larger ESD's; please contact PDT Sales to negotiate pricing for such special projects.

Trial period

If you sign up with a valid promotion code, you will receive 1000 free PDT Credits for evaluation purposes. Please contact PDT Sales if you did not receive a promotion code, or if you need additional credits to complete your evaluation.

After the free promotional PDT credits are exhausted, users may pay to obtain more credits, using our credit card interface.

Bulk Discounts

Substantial discounts are available for purchasing PDT credits in bulk. Please inquire.

Academic Research

Substantial discounts are available for academic research, especially student projects. Please inquire. For large academic projects, we expect expenses for PDT to become incorporated into grant budgets.

Dynamic pricing details

Usage of PDT is priced to reflect usage of computational resources, both CPU and memory usage. The actual dependence on computational resources used by an experiment determined by an experimental space definition (ESD) is nonlinear, but our pricing algorithm implements a linear approximation to these nonlinearities.

In the graphs below, we consider a range of ESD's for Factorial experiments, to illustrate variations in price per generation. The graphs illustrate price dependence with respect to the number of experimental parameters, and to the number of values each parameter has. The price also varies with the number of experiments performed per generation, but this variation is weaker, and not illustrated.

In all examples, we price an ESD that has a certain number of parameters, with a fixed number of values per parameter, the same number of values for all parameters. Note that in typical real-use cases, an ESD will have different numbers of values for different parameters; this would be reflected in the pricing algorithm, though it is not explored in the graphs below.

The following figure illustrates how price increases as a function of the number of parameters, for a range of number of values per parameter, assuming a population size of 30 experiments per generation. Of all components of the ESD, the number of parameters has the strongest influence on price.

The next strongest influence on price comes from variations in the number of values allowed for each parameter. This dependence is illustrated in the following graph, for a range of different numbers of parameters.

The price is also affected even more weakly by population size; this effect is not illustrated here.

When you enter your ESD into the web interface, the price per generation (in PDT Credits) will appear in the left sidebar. This amount will be debited from your account each generation. Proceeding to experimental design of the first generation will indicate your acceptance of this price.
